Zehrs in Ontario: how the Kitchener grocer works and how to read its flyer

From a family supermarket to a Loblaw banner

Zehrs began in Kitchener in 1950, when the Zehr family opened a supermarket; co-founder Lester Zehr started it with his brother and their father. The name stayed on the door long after the ownership changed. Loblaw bought the chain, and the Canadian Encyclopedia dates that purchase to 1963, while Wikipedia places it in the mid-1970s. Sources disagree, so treat either year with caution. What is not in doubt is today's setup: Zehrs belongs to the Loblaw family of banners, alongside Atlantic Superstore, and Loblaw's Ontario operations are run from Brampton.

Over the decades the stores have carried three names: Zehrs Markets, Zehrs Food Plus and Zehrs Greatfood. A new logo and store design arrived in 2010, and renovated stores became Zehrs Markets. The footprint is entirely in Ontario, with around forty stores stretching from Kingsville in the south to Orillia in the north, and from Windsor in the west to Niagara Falls in the east. Neither Toronto nor Hamilton has one, so a search such as zehrs orillia or zehrs welland is really about finding the nearest branch.

To see how Zehrs sits among its rivals, browse the Canada overview or the full Grocery section, where Costco and Bulk Barn offer a very different way of buying food.

What a branch sells besides groceries

A typical Zehrs is a one-stop shop: bakery, ready meals, meat and produce, a pharmacy, an optical counter, usually a wine section, plus Joe Fresh clothing and some electronics. Services listed for the chain include PC Express click-and-collect, dry cleaning and, at select locations, a walk-in clinic. Not every store has everything, so check your branch before driving across town. Most people start with zehrs near me, and the store locator on the official site settles it. Opening hours vary by branch, so that locator is also the place to confirm zehrs hours.

Private labels are a big part of the Loblaw system. No Name arrived in 1978 as a basic, low-cost line, and President's Choice followed in 1984 as the higher-quality range, which Zehrs is known for carrying. Comparing a house-brand item with a name brand on the same shelf is one of the simplest ways to stretch a grocery budget.

When your branch stocks clothing or small appliances, put its flyer next to Clothing, Shoes & Sport and Electronics & Appliances before buying. Drugstore basics can be checked against Health & Beauty, and for household or garden jobs, Home & Garden and Canadian Tire give you a second price point.

Using the weekly flyer and PC Optimum

The Zehrs flyer we hold right now runs from 22.10.2026 to 28.10.2026 and has 17 pages. These flyers are usually valid for about 7 days, and a new one tends to appear on a Thursday. Many shoppers look up zehrs flyers this week as a routine, and searches such as zehrs flyer kitchener, zehrs flyer waterloo or zehrs flyer guelph show how often people want their own area. If an item looks different from what you expected, confirm it at your branch.

Savings go beyond the printed page. Loblaw created PC Optimum in February 2018 by merging Shoppers Optimum with PC Plus. Points can be earned at Loblaw grocery banners, Shoppers Drug Mart and Esso, and at grocery stores they are redeemed in blocks of ten thousand points. Register your card in the app, load the offers before you shop, and look for the PC Optimum logo in the flyer. Personalized offers, based on your past purchases, are refreshed weekly.

Because the loyalty offers change, read the current terms in the app instead of relying on memory. For a wider comparison, open Other, check what Dollarama and Co-op Food are running, or return to the Grocery hub and the Canada page.
